Len Bernstein has spoken on the relation of photography and the questions of our lives, both in the U.S. and abroad. For over 35 years his careful study of the medium has been based on this Aesthetic Realism principle stated by Eli Siegel: All beauty is a making one of
opposites, and the
making one of opposites is what we are
going after
in ourselves.
Mr. Bernstein has lectured on the lives and work of many of photography’s important figures, such as Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Robert Capa, Gordon Parks, W. Eugene Smith, and Jacob Riis. In his workshops he discusses landmark images of the 19th and 20th centuries, the work of attendees, and his own work. Students learn how a photographer's successful technique always arises from emotion that is fair to his or her subject--and evidence for this can be found in images from any style or period. Most recently, he gave a four part workshop at the Flushing Library, Queens, NY which covered the following subjects:
